WWII5 ARMY 85 DIV
337 INF CANNON CO
Biography
PFC Garld T. Bass served honorably in the United States Army during World War II with the 85th Infantry Division (“Custer Division”), assigned to the 337th Infantry Regiment, Cannon Company, part of the U.S. Fifth Army. The 85th Division fought in the Italian Campaign, one of the most difficult and costly theaters of the war in Europe.
Landing in Italy in early 1944, the 85th Division was committed to combat against entrenched German forces defending mountainous terrain, narrow valleys, and heavily fortified positions. Infantry and supporting units advanced under constant artillery and mortar fire, often fighting uphill against well-prepared defenses. As a member of a Cannon Company, PFC Bass served in a role that brought heavy firepower forward to support infantry assaults, frequently operating close to the front lines under enemy observation and attack.
During this campaign, PFC Bass was wounded in action and awarded the Purple Heart on May 3, 1944, confirming that he sustained injuries as a direct result of enemy action. His wounding occurred during a period of intense fighting as Allied forces pushed northward in an effort to break German defensive lines and drive toward Rome.
