Service History

SFC Frederick Edward Pommer
September 20, 1973, to February 1, 1994
SFC Pommer retired from the Army Feb. 1, 1994, at Fort Bragg North Carlonia and moved to Port Charlotte, Florida where he became a realtor. He retired and moved to Greensboro, North Carolina on March 1, 2024.
Enlisting in the United States Marine Corps Reserve basic training was served at Parris Island; 2nd battalion platoon 244. After graduation he was transferred to Pensacola Naval Air Station for training as a combat photographer.
After completing training, he reported to Willow Grove Naval Air Station, Pennsylvania, his Reserve duty station. Deciding to enlist as a full-time active Marine he contacted his recruiter, but no slots were currently available. Leaving his office the Army recruiter next door offered an enlistment.
Pvt Pommer assigned to Fort Jackson, South Carolina to receive his Army uniforms. After uniform issue he was transferred to Fort Monmouth, New Jersey to attend a Photographic Labatory School.
PFC/SPC Pommer was assigned to Yuma Proving Grounds, Arizona and worked as a black and white and color photographic laboratory technician and as a photographer.
In 1976 he was assigned to the United States Military Liaison Mission (USMLN) Berlin, German, where he earned a Meritorious Unit Commendation. In 1977 SPC Pommer transferred to 130th Engineer Brigade Hanau, West Germany, re-enlisted as an information specialist and reported to Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana for training.
Training complete, SGT Pommer reported to194th Separate Armored Brigade, Fort Knox, Kentucky, assuming the duties Public Affairs NCOIC. In 1979, he was assigned to Frankfurt-main Army Regional Medical Center, 97th General Hospital, Public Affairs/ Patient Assistance Office. While station here he met and married his wife Regine Irene Reineke.
Re-assigned to Fort McPherson, Georgia in August 1982, he assumed the duties of Public Affairs NCOIC and newspaper managing editor. Shortly after arriving he received a promotion to Staff Sergeant.
Next assignment was United States Army Japan, 17th Area Support Group, Camp Zama, promotion to Sergeant First Class, NCOIC of the Garrison Public Affairs office and a weekly newspaper printed at Stars and Stripes Tokyo.
Arriving at Fort Dix, New Jersey in 1989 assumed responsibilities of Public Affairs NCOIC.
Tasked in 1990 to help create a new unit at Fort Bragg, attached to the 18th Airborne Corps, SFC Pommer was one of the first soldiers assigned to establish the 22nd Mobile Public Affairs Detachment (MPAD) and get it ready to deploy for Desert Storm. During deployment the detachment was based in Riyadh and Dhahran, Saudi Arabia and the establishment of Camp Doha, Kuwait. Returning to Fort Bragg in October 1991.
During his assignment to the unit the MPAD also assisted with Hurricane Andrew which eared the unit members a Humanitarian Service Medal and his Team returned to Camp Doha, Kuwait one more time.
