Biography

Born in Cannstatt (today Bad Cannstatt) in Baden-Würthemberg, which today is one of the most populous boroughs of Stuttgart.
Family folklore said Ernest and his father worked as gardener for the last Emperor, but since Wilhelm I. of Würthemberg commissioned the „Wilhelma“. they most likely worked there.
To get Ernest out of harms way when the political situation in Prussia soured he was sent to the United States where he promptly joined the US Army/Cavalry in 1880 and fought in the Indian Wars out West as well as the Spanish-American war. Sergeant Pommer’s last assignment prior to retiring after30 years of service was at Philadelphia’s/Frankfort Arsenal. His application to re-enter into active service for WW1 was not accepted, assuming due to his German decent or age. He died in Philadelphia/Bridesburg on Aug 14, 1931 leaving behind a spouse Carrie and three children Frederick August Pommer, Sr., Bertha and Anna May Pommer.
