Biography

Henry K. Burtner was Greensboro’s first Soldier to give his life for his country in World War I. He volunteered for service in 1917 and completed his training at Camp Hancock, Georgia.
After joining the 3rd Infantry Division, he went to France in April 1918. While engaged in combat action at Chateau-Thierry, he lost his life on the night of June 18, 1918 at age 19.
He was buried at Belleau Woods June 27, 1918.
The Henry K. Burtner Post No. 53, American Legion, is named in his honor.
