Biography
James Macon Coghill Jr. was born February 7, 1933. He was a graduate of Gold Sands High School in Louisburg, NC.
Soon after, he answered the call to serve in the United States Navy during a pivotal era, working aboard the USS Bryce Canyon—a destroyer tender commissioned in 1956. The Bryce Canyon functioned as a mobile repair and support ship, providing critical maintenance and technical assistance that kept destroyers and other fleet vessels mission-ready during the Cold War era. Service aboard such a ship required skill, discipline, and long hours, reflecting the essential behind-the-scenes work that sustained U.S. naval operations.
After his military service, James returned to North Carolina, where he devoted over three decades to public service, retiring after 33 years with the City of Greensboro.
A member of Bethel Baptist Church in Greensboro, he found joy in helping others, especially by cutting grass and making household repairs for elderly neighbors.
James died in 2022 at the age of 89.
