Biography
Steven Copley was born in 1951, in Durham, and spent most of his life in Greensboro, where he moved in 1955. From an early age, Steven Copley demonstrated a commitment to excellence, both academically and athletically. He graduated from Page High School and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), where he distinguished himself as a letterman in both soccer and cross country at each institution. His pursuit of higher education continued with a master's degree from the University of Southern California.
Throughout his life, Steven was recognized as an honor student, earning numerous awards and commendations both in civilian life and during his military service. One of his greatest ambitions was to serve as a U.S. Marine, a dream he fulfilled with a distinguished 20-year career, retiring as a major. One of his assignments was officer-in-charge of the MWCS-38 rear element, preparing his unit for deployment. The unit, led by Copley, saw active duty during Desert Storm, participating in the invasion of Iraq.
Beyond his military achievements, Steven Copley was an avid sportsman, enjoying fishing and hunting across the United States and Canada. He was deeply devoted to his children's sports activities, supporting and encouraging their athletic pursuits.
Major Steven Copley passed away on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at his residence in Greensboro. His life was celebrated with a Mass of Christian Burial and military honors, reflecting the respect and admiration he earned throughout his career and personal life.
