Biography
Samuel J. Case was born on July 3, 1925, in Stokes County, North Carolina. He had 12 siblings. He lived a life defined by service, mechanical skill, and dedication to his community.
During World War II, Samuel served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps of Engineers played an essential role in the Allied war effort by constructing roads, bridges, and airfields, building defensive positions and fortifications, clearing obstacles, repairing damaged infrastructure, and supporting amphibious landings and logistical operations. These efforts enabled combat forces to advance and maintain supply lines in challenging and often dangerous environments.
Throughout his life, Sam remained proud of his World War II service, carrying that sense of duty into his work and volunteerism. Following the war, Sam settled in Greensboro where he was employed by Bales and Truitt for 52 years, working as a heavy engine mechanic. His mechanical skills became a defining feature of his professional identity and later served his community in additional ways.
Beyond his professional career, Sam demonstrated deep commitment to public service as a volunteer fireman in Fire District 13, where he served for 28 years.
In addition to responding to emergencies, he provided mechanical services for fire department vehicles, ensuring that equipment used to protect lives and property remained operational. His contributions supported those who responded to emergencies and strengthened the safety and resilience of the community he served. [
At the time of his passing in 2019, he was recognized as one of the remaining World War II veterans in his community, representing a living connection to a pivotal chapter in American and world history.
