Biography
Roy William Clemmons was born May 3, 1891, in Greensboro, NC to Alice (Leonard) and John Henry Clemmons. He was one of 4 children, Myrtle, Bryan and Ernest. His father died of the typhoid epidemic of 1897. He was a lifelong resident of Greensboro. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. His first wife, Shirley Wilson, died young. His second wife was Fawnie Enza (Seawell) Clemmons. They had four children: Roy Seawell, twins Richard Clyde and John Henry and Betty Ruth. He started working at twelve at Lindley Nurseries. He then worked at Cones Mills starting at the age of 14 and became the general manager for the five Cone Mills company stores. After the war he sold insurance, automobiles, and real estate. He was an honest salesman. He also worked for the US government as an expeditor at ORD during WWII. At the time of his death he, with and Jim Pinnix, was buying mill houses, renovating them, then selling them back to the former occupants. He died at Veteran's Hospital in Fayetteville at the age of 57 on August 23,1948. He is buried at Green Hill Cemetery. He died before his children were grown. He raised his children to be patriotic and to serve their country. His three sons served also. Roy S Clemmons, MD was a Lt. Col. in the US Air Force as a flight surgeon, Richard and John both served in the US Army Intelligence Corps, and his daughter Betty worked with Selective Service for a period of time.
Service History
He served as a corpsman under Major Wesley Long in the Army Medical Corps during WWI at HQ Base Hospital #65 in Brest, France with the Medical Department of the A.E.F. He served from 1918-1919.
Favorite Memory of Serving
During his time of service, he witnessed horrible diseases, awful injuries and much death. He carried this with him throughout his life.
