Service History

I joined the US Army at the age of 17 years old after dropping out of school. I trained at Fort Dix, New Jersey. I was sent to McCully Barracks in Wackernheim, Germany. While there, I earned my GED and received my High School Diploma. In 1971, at 18 years old, I volunteered for Vietnam and was transferred to the 101st Airborne Division 501st Infantry. I was moved from base camp to Fire Support Base Tomahawk where I ran the generator to keep communication for the guys in the bush. When the 501st left the firebase, we turned it over to the ARVNS. After extensive cleanup we gathered up all the claymores and detonators and loaded them up on a deuce and a half and headed back to Phu Bai to the basecamp. Then we started a cleanup operation to move the 101st out of Vietnam. The 101st stood down and went back to Fort Campbell, Kentucky. I was transferred to the 24th Corp HQ -MR1 in Da Nang. I was a wheel vehicle mechanic while there and stayed 2 months. We turned MR1 HQ over to the ARVNS. I went to Freedom Hill and departed for the US. I was then sent to Fort Carson, CO with 14 months of active duty to serve and left the service on July 13, 1973.
