Biography
John Friel Webb was born on September 27, 1950, in Greensboro, North Carolina, to a family with deep roots in the community. Growing up in a time of social change and national unrest, John felt a strong sense of duty to serve his country. In 1970, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and began his military training.
After completing basic training, John was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 198th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. As a Light Weapons Infantryman, he was trained to engage in direct combat and provide support to his fellow soldiers in the field.
John arrived in Vietnam in early 1971, joining his unit in Quang Tin Province. The region was known for its challenging terrain and frequent enemy engagements. Despite the dangers, John demonstrated exceptional courage and commitment to his comrades.
On September 2, 1971, during a combat operation, Specialist Four John Friel Webb was killed in action by small arms fire.
John's family and friends remember him not only as a soldier but as a son, brother, and friend whose life was marked by kindness, humor, and a deep sense of duty. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him and in the enduring gratitude of a nation.
John Friel Webb's name is inscribed on Panel W2, Line 9 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
