Biography

Wendell “Jack” Brooks Walker was born on June 22, 1926, in Gibsonville.

Answering the call to serve his country, Jack enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II, joining the ranks of many North Carolinians who bravely entered the armed forces after 1941. His time in the Navy instilled in him a deep sense of patriotism and discipline, qualities that he carried throughout his life.

After the war, Jack returned to Greensboro and began a steady career, first working as a Warehouseman for Central Motors and later as a Quality Control Operator for Golden State Foods. His reliability and work ethic earned him respect among colleagues and friends.
Jack was deeply committed to his faith and community. He was an active member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church, serving on the Board of Trustees and as President of the Methodist Men’s Organization. He also gave back as a Boy Scout Master, a volunteer with Greensboro Urban Ministries, and as a Senior Shop Steward with Teamster Local Union #391.

A passionate sports fan, Jack especially loved NASCAR and baseball. He was an avid New York Yankees supporter and, in his younger years, even played some minor league baseball—a testament to his love for the game.

Above all, Jack was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
Wendell “Jack” Walker passed away in Greensboro on May 29, 2015, at the age of 88.
