Biography
William Irvin Anderson was born on November 20th, 1922 in Greensboro. He attended Riverside Military Academy in Georgia.
He was a Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps and flew one of the most iconic aircraft of the war—the four-engine Boeing B-17, renowned for its toughness and its crews’ courage under fire. Flying with the Army Air Corps, Anderson took part in the long and dangerous strategic bombing campaigns out of Italy that helped turn the tide of the war in favor of the Allies. Each mission required extraordinary skill, teamwork, and bravery, as B-17 crews faced intense anti-aircraft fire, enemy fighters, and the hazards of high-altitude flight over enemy territory.
He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was President of his fraternity, Phi Gamma Delta.
William owned and operated A & F Bookkeeping until his retirement. He was also a member of the Greensboro Country Club.
William passed away on Friday, July 24, 2009.
